Are You Tracking Your Sales and Advertisements?
by Folusho Orokunle
There might be a million ways to make money online. And each of those million techniques might have a hundred nuances that can be done if the people with the right skill took the time to learn and do the right thing. However, life does not always afford us such a chance or the opportunity. We often need to do with what we got and complete tasks based on limited information. That’s when it becomes important to focus on the priorities.
Pay Per Click advertisement is one such way. There are entire books about optimization pay per click campaigns. You might have even downloaded some or bought some. But did you really read them? If you did read, how much of it did you implement? If you read and implemented more than 20% of what you learned, I am sure you made quite a bit of money with it and are in the 99th percentile of Internet Marketers.
For those others that are like me, here’s an article that can help you get the most important aspects of pay per click marketing and put it to practice TODAY.
Here’s a story to start with. I was discussing Internet Marketing and pay per click with a friend and colleague who makes quite a bit of money online. I asked him where his sales were coming from. And his answer was that he did not know. I went - “Are you saying you don’t track where your visitors are coming from?”. He actually did not have a clue. And did not pretend to know or cover up. He is honest, which is perhaps why he is successful. But I was totally taken aback at the fact that a successful person like him could have missed something so basic.
Well, I am sure you are thinking now - “There you go, it does not matter whether you track visitors and results because this guy did it without it”. That’s far from the truth and I will tell you why. He got lucky. You may not. Even if you are successful, if you’re not testing and tracking, you can’t possibly be optimizing your promotions.
For instance, if you had five adwords ads running on Google and other places and each one is costing you $200 a month, that’s $1000 per month in ad expeneses. Say you made $3500, and not tracking which ones are making you money, then you are assuming that each one made you $700. However, when you tracked your ads, it is entirely possible that $2500 came from just one ad and the remaining combined makde only $1000. There you go, get rid of the bad ones and keep the good ones and invest more in them.
Sounds simple, right. No brainer, you might say. You will be surprised that very few do this simple task. They have too many ads running and too little time to optimize and end up taking the hit and wasting money on the bad ads. They defend themselves saying they don’t have time and are focusing on more sales and revenues and don’t mind some ads that don’t work. Well, I am not going to confuse you today. The idea is that you can double or triple your profit just by doing this ONE simple obvious thing. Track your ads and see which ones are performing. Set conversion goals and see which ads are contributing. This is NOT one of those thousands of ideas you read about and forget. DO IT. Today. If you don’t have the time, hire someone for cheap anywhere. Like freelancer sites such as elance.com etc. This is the NUMBER ONE thing you should do if you are using online advertising. This will save you tons and make you smarter about your marketing.
And tracking ads is not the only thing you should be doing. You should be doing split testing on your sales pages to see if one letter performs better than another. If you only have one letter out there, you have no way of knowing if you are optimizing your sales. And you don’t have to change much. You can start by just comparing one headline to another to see which one generates more sales.
Basically, if you’re not testing and tracking, you’re working in the dark. There is no other way to put it. So if you’ve been letting your business fly by the seat of its pants with no clue of whether or not you’re getting the most out of your ads and sales letters, you might want to think about doing some testing and tracking.
It certainly can’t hurt.
